1. The origins of hempcrete: A journey through history

Hemp has a history going back thousands of years. Even in ancient times, cultures such as the Chinese, Greeks and Egyptians used hemp to make ropes, textiles and paper. In the early 20th century, French researchers discovered that hemp shives could be combined with lime to create a stable insulating material.

This mixture became known as “hempcrete” and gained recognition particularly in France and Great Britain. Unfortunately, hempcrete declined in importance after World War II when synthetic building materials became popular.

2. The rediscovery and modern use of hempcrete

In the 1990s, hempcrete gained attention again due to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly building materials. In Europe, particularly in France and the United Kingdom, architects began to promote the benefits of hempcrete.

Today, hempcrete is used worldwide as a sustainable solution in modern residential construction. Not only does it offer excellent thermal insulation and moisture regulation, but also contributes to climate protection by sequestering CO₂.
