The basis of hempcrete is hemp shives, the core material of the hemp plant. As hemp grows, the plant absorbs large amounts of CO₂ from the atmosphere – up to 15 tons of CO₂ per hectare. This stored CO₂ remains bound in the material even when the hemp is processed and is not released again.
2. CO₂ storage in the building material
Hempcrete consists of a mixture of hemp shives, water and a natural binder (e.g. lime). What makes it special is that, as hempcrete hardens, the lime absorbs additional CO₂ from the air – a process known as carbonation. This not only makes the building material more stable, but also allows the material to act as a durable carbon store.
3. Longevity and sustainability
Hempcrete is not only relatively low-impact to produce, but also extremely durable. It remains stable for decades and permanently binds the stored CO₂ – in contrast to conventional building materials such as concrete, which is often associated with high CO₂ emissions.
4. Low environmental impact
Compared to conventional building materials, the production of hempcrete conserves resources:
•No high energy consumption: Production does not require energy-intensive processes such as those used to manufacture cement.
•Low-waste: The entire manufacturing process is low in emissions because both the shives and the lime binder are environmentally friendly.
This means: Fewer emissions in production, more storage in the finished product.
5. Natural cycle
At the end of its lifespan, hempcrete can be returned to the environment without causing any harm. The material is biodegradable and can have a comparatively low environmental impact. Thanks to this natural cycle, the stored carbon can remain within the natural material cycle.
